f you are like most everyone in our club, you
would like to protect the sills of your rig. This Tech Tip provided by John Vegas show us how to add RoverTym Engineering Rock Sliders to your Disco II.
My Disclaimer:
I am not recommending you use these instructions to install a snorkel on your vehicle. My advice is to take your vehicle to an authorized dealer and have the snorkel installed by a professional. |
|
The following is simply a documentary of how I installed my snorkel. If you decide to purchase and install a snorkel and end up butchering your car... it's your fault...
Take it to an authorized dealer! |
While this is a pretty convenient
spot to store it, it is unsafe if you slam
on your brakes quickly--the flashlight
may slide out and become entangled in your feet
and pedals.
I
wanted to mount my 4-cell
MAGLITE in
a place where it was easy to
access
while
safely
stored.
I looked around a bit and ended up mounting
it below the driver's seat. There
are several places you could mount a MAGLITE
in your vehicle. I drive a Discovery II; hence,
everything below is based on my installation.
MAGLITE makes mounting
brackets to hold their flashlights. While
you'd think you would be able to find the mounting
brackets everywhere you'd
find a the actual flashlight, this has proven
to not be the case... especially in Houston.
I ended
up finding them at the Bass
Pro Shops in the Katy
Mills Mall.
The mounting
brackets come with some cheapo screws, so
I went to my local hardware store and purchased
the following to allow for a more secure and
professional installation:
- #8-32X3/4" stainless steel screws - 4 each
- #8-32 stainless steel nuts with nylon inserts
- 4 each
- 5/32"X7/8" stainless steel fender washers
- 4 each
The first thing I did was
remove the three screws and one little plastic
"thing"
that secured the plastic cover surrounding the
lower section of the driver's
seat. The screws were straightforward to remove.
The little plastic thing came out by gently
removing the color-coded pin from the black
piece with a flat-head screwdriver (you can
see the two pieces and how they fit together
in the picture below). Once I had the
color-coded piece removed,
I
removed
the black piece as well.
When I removed the plastic cover
and flipped it over, I noticed there were raised
areas on the back. I wanted to ensure the washers
didn't interefere with these raised areas so
I postioned the mounting bracket in such a
way that the installation of the washers would
not require me to cut away any of these rasied
areas.
I simply marked the holes and
drilled them with a 5/16" drill bit and screwed
everything together.
Once both mounting brackets were
installed, I put everything back together and
snapped in my light.
Overall this is a very simple
installation. It took me more time to take
the pictures and write this article than it
did to actually install the mounting brackets
in the vehicle, but if you have any questions
or need any help, let me know. - Bill Mallin |
